Top 8 Questions to Ask Your Local Collision Repair Shop

Auto paint has come a long way.

If you’ve been in an accident, one that requires collision repair, your first thought is likely “how quickly can I get my vehicle repaired and back on the road?”. This is understandable, as you need your car to get back and forth to work and school. However, taking your car to the local auto body shop on the corner just because it’s the only one you know about isn’t always wise.

To find a reliable auto body shop, do your homework and ask all the necessary questions to ensure you get the highest quality work for your budget and your car.

1.  Is there a warranty on auto body repair work?

If the shop offers a warranty, find out how long it lasts and what it covers. Hance’s Uptown Collision Center, for example, offers a lifetime warranty on workmanship and materials. Ask us about it!

2.  Do you have rental cars onsite or do you provide loaner vehicles?

Being without your car is certainly an inconvenience, so it can’t hurt to ask if the shop offers  rentals, loaners or courtesy cars while yours is being fixed. Some have a car rental facility located in their shop or at least nearby. Others would be happy to give you a loaner or courtesy cars that you can use in the meantime.

3.  How long will the repair take?

Ah, the holy grail of all collision repair shop questions. Unfortunately, it doesn’t always involve a clear answer. Many factors can affect the length of repair time, including:

  • Extent of damage
  • How busy the shop is at the moment
  • Holidays during which the shop is closed or has limited hours
  • How fast the insurance company gets payment to you
  • Level of the repair technicians’ certifications and training
  • How quickly the shop can obtain the parts and paint you need

4.  Is your car covered while it is in the shop?

Find out if the shop carries fire and theft insurance so you know you’re covered in the event your car is damaged, destroyed, burglarized or stolen while in the shop. Don’t stop paying your auto insurance premiums on your car while it’s in the shop. You may be penalized by your insurance company if you let your policy lapse, even for one day. Also, if your mechanic needs to take your vehicle out for a test drive, he or she will need coverage.

5.  Will the paint match the rest of my car?

Most cars have a paint code imprinted on a plate located either under the hood, in the door, or in the trunk. This code shows the precise color of the paint from the original manufacturer. Make sure the shop will use that exact color of paint and not just a similar color.

6.     How soon can I wash my car after collision repair?

Usually, collision repair shops return your car back to you clean. But you should still ask when it’s safe to take it through a car wash that relies on friction brushing, acid presoaks or super-concentrated car wash soap.

7.  Does the shop have any certifications?

Certifications are signs of a reputable collision repair shop. For instance, Hance’s Paint and Body Service is an I-CARTM and ASETM certified garage, with experienced, friendly technicians who provide exceptional collision repairs backed by quality workmanship.

8.  Will you put everything in writing?

Ask for a written estimate before work, and an itemized bill after the work has been completed. Get the payment policy in writing too, which should outline labor rates, materials, guarantees, warranty information, and acceptable forms of payment.
