Driving Tips to Avoid Collisions

Car Accident Dallas Texas

Thousands of auto accidents happen every year. Not all will involve serious loss of life and injury, and to a lesser extent, damage to the vehicle body itself. However, it’s good to remind ourselves of safe driving tips to avoid those collisions that could at the very least involve the need for auto body repairSave some money and your life by following these common sense driving tips.

Be a Defensive Driver

Yes, you probably took this type of course before you got your license but it’s always good to brush up on the concept. Defensive driving means always being on the lookout for the potential behaviors of other drivers. Being aware of your surroundings and staying alert as to what could happen will help you avoid collisions. Basically, anticipate the unexpected moves of other drivers! Never assume another driver will behave as you would. Stay a safe distance behind cars, trucks and buses, and keep your eyes not just on the road in front of you but side to side and back too. Check mirrors and drive the speed limit so you have time to react if you have to. Even when going through a green light, slow down and check the other direction.

More than 800 people die and 200,000 are injured in the United States each year as a result of being hit by drivers who ran a red light.

Stay Focused

Distracted driving claimed the lives of 3,477 people in 2015 alone. Most people will readily acknowledge the dangers of texting and driving but do it anyway. But texting isn’t the only way to get distracted behind the wheel. Eating, applying makeup, tuning the radio, tending to your kids in the back seat, and talking on the phone are all forms of distracted driving — and they can be deadly. Many states have strict rules now about distracted driving particularly when it comes to using a phone. It’s best to leave your phone in the glove compartment when driving or use the Do Not Disturb feature on your phone. If you absolutely must conduct a phone call, use a hands-free option.

Be Careful at Night

Car accident statistics at night are pretty sobering. Despite 60 percent less traffic on the roads, more than 40 percent of all fatal car accidents happen after the sun goes down. More people tend to be drinking and driving because that’s when parties are held. Others may not be able to see wildlife or pedestrians in the road as well due to the lack of sunlight. Always drive slowly enough so that you would be able to stop within the distance of your headlights if you had to. Keep scanning the sides of the road as you navigate so as to avoid a collision with a deer or other animal.

Drive Unimpaired

We all know not to drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs, but many of us still think a drink or two won’t hurt. Assign a designated driver, take an Uber or stay overnight if you think you’ll be drinking. Impairment doesn’t always involve alcohol or drugs. Many collisions are a result of driver fatigue. Falling asleep at the wheel can result in deadly consequences for all parties.

Maintain Your Vehicle

Many collisions can be avoided. But because of poorly maintained vehicles, brakes can jam up and tires can make your car skid out of control. Stay on top of regular maintenance and service calls. For example, replace worn brake pads as needed and rotate your tires regularly.

All of this being said, even the most cautious drivers can get in collisions. Sometimes, they’re just unavoidable no matter how careful you are. First and foremost, we hope you stay safe out there on the roadways. If you do get into an accident that requires collision repair, we can help.
