Everyday Things You Can do to Keep Your Paint Job Looking Fresh

October 20th, 2016

Wouldn’t it be great if your car’s paint job looked as fresh as the day you bought it? Well, there are steps you can take to ensure your car stays looking shiny and new despite the threat of time, weather, environment and the elements. From sun to road debris, so many things threaten the sanctity of your car’s paint job. Check out how you can combat these effects.

Good Old Fashioned Hand Washing

You don’t always need a fancy detail job to make your car shine again. Regular hand washing will get the job done just fine. However, you’ll need to use the right car washing solution — not dish soap like 60% of the population resorts to. While it will certainly clean your car of dirt, it will also strip your car of protective wax coatings, exposing the vehicle to nicks and stains, says Popular Mechanics. By using a safe solution that’s specifically designed for vehicle washes, you’re doing your part to preserve your car’s finish.

Another benefit of washing your car by hand is that you can get familiar with the contours and unique features of your vehicle, giving you the ability to notice changes or any kind of damage the next time you wash your car.

car-wash1

Going Beyond a Wash

While hand washing is a great first step, it’s often not enough to get off the stubborn bird droppings, sap and tar that can cling to your paint job. Over time, these can settle into the paint and saturate through wax coatings into the color below. You can use paint cleaners to get off unwanted environmental effects that have become bonded to the paint, as well as small scratches, known as swirl marks. Alternatively, you could rub paint cleaning clay with liquid cleaner wax as a lubricant to remove contaminants from your car’s surface.

Restore the Shine

Try an oscillating buffer to get that shine you’ve been looking to restore, but only attempt this if you are a serious DIY’er. In most cases, we recommend you get a pro to do this, as one wrong move can damage your car’s paint job. Now it’s time to give your car a coat of wax, which is what will make it look shiny. Wax is great for absorbing small stains and scratches, but it will need to be repeated every few months. A good rule of thumb for cars that spend their day outdoors all year is to repeat a waxing every season. Whether you prefer a paste wax or a liquid wax, the effect is the same. Two coats is fine; any more than that is overkill.

Clean the Glass

This is the last step so as to get off the dirt accumulated from the other steps. Use a glass cleaner sans ammonia, which means you should forgo the use of those typical household window cleaners and pick up a special glass cleaner at the auto store. That’s because ammonia can damage vinyl upholstery and the instrument panel. Use a microfiber cloth rather than paper towels so no dust is left behind.

Keep Your Car Cool in the Summer Heat

August 30th, 2016

To keep from overheating (and we’re talking about the vehicles AND their owners!), there are ways you can keep your car cool in the dog days of summer. Even though you may have AC, it’s not efficient to run it full blast all the time. Check out these tips to be smart about staying cool.

keep your car cool in the texas summer heat

Let Out the Heat

If your car has been sitting outside in the hot sun all day, turn it on and crack the windows to let some of the heat escape. If you have sun protector for your dash board, use it when you know you’ll be parking in direct sunlight for several hours. Once you’ve let out some heat, turn on the AC and make sure all your vents are working correctly. Turn them all to the ON setting (hey, you never know when your kids have been fiddling with the settings!), and position each passenger’s vents for optimal cooling pleasure.

If you don’t have time to crack the windows for awhile before taking off, set your climate controls to push fresh or AC air through all footwell vents first. Then, open your windows and sunroof. Because hot air rises, that trapped stale air will leave the car that much faster. Here’s a handy tip: got some cold packs? Put them in front of your vents and blow the cool air on those. The air that reaches you will be double the cool!

Keep the Engine Cool

Once driving, especially for long distances, try not to use your AC full blast every second of the way. Use it sparingly. Why? Your air conditioning compressor runs off your car’s engine, so switch it off now and then to keep your engine from working so hard, suggests CarMax. Some other tips to keep the engine from working too hard:

  • Check the coolant. If it’s too low, your engine will run hotter than it should. Add coolant yourself per the specifications in your operator’s manual. You can also ask your auto body repair mechanic to do this for you.
  • Check the oil. Because oil disperses heat from your engine, you can burn oil a bit faster in the summer than cooler months. Check the levels or have your mechanic do it. Stay on top of the levels even between scheduled oil changes.

Getting Hot, Hot, Hot!

If you’re driving and things feel a bit too hot, pull the car over. This can happen when your temperature gauge is headed toward a dangerous level. Driving an overheated car for a prolonged period of time can cause much more damage than if you simply pulled over and let it cool down. It may seem counter productive, but switch on the heat to get more coolant moving through the engine block, then open the hood and let things cool off. Call for service.

You can avoid all that problem in the first place by adhering to your car’s maintenance schedule so it runs as efficiently as it can. The more efficient your vehicle is, the healthier it will be overall, with less stress put on all the systems.

How to Work With Your Insurance Company for Adequate Compensation

August 3rd, 2016

Getting into a car accident is stressful enough without adding insurance adjustments and compensations to the mix. Immediately following an accident, you know you have to share insurance information with the other driver, but what happens after that? How can you be sure you’re getting adequately compensated for the damage? If you have a trusted mechanic on your side like Hance’s Uptown Collision Center, you will be assisted throughout the whole process. We work with insurance companies all the time to ensure our customers get the compensation they deserve. And not just SOME money — enough to cover ALL damage to the vehicle. The first step is to schedule an appointment for a repair estimate.

Even if you weren’t at fault for the accident and you are due reimbursement or compensation for accident-related costs, dealing with insurance companies can still be confusing, daunting and frustrating. Assuming you have started the process by contacting the other insurance company and getting the ball rolling, the next step is to get reimbursement for property damage and theft.

car-insurance-help-paid

Determining Reimbursement: Getting Proof

The claims adjuster will evaluate these factors by taking photographs and writing notes about all damage to the vehicle. Your written statement about what happened also further helps the adjuster in his decision regarding compensation for your damages and loss. DMV.org suggests keeping all receipts and before-and-after pictures if you have repair work done to your car.

Diminished Value

This is where Hance’s Auto comes in. We can work with your insurance company to come up with a mutually acceptable number that you feel comfortable with. That’s even if your vehicle is worth repairing — it could be deemed a total loss. This means it will cost more to fix the vehicle than the vehicle is worth.

Medical Costs

If you are found not to be at fault for the accident, you can go after the other insurance company for compensation on your medical bills. Sometimes, the other person doesn’t have insurance, or maybe the amount you’re quoted won’t be nearly enough to cover your bills. In this case, you may want to get in touch with a personal injury attorney to fight for additional compensation.

Deductibles

It depends on your exact situation, but you may have to pay a deductible before getting payment for your claim. If you’re eventually determined not to be at fault, you may be able to get that money back later.

Is Paintless Dent Repair Right for You?

June 24th, 2016

Getting in an accident is no picnic. Provided you and everyone involved are OK following an incident like this — whether a fender bender or something more serious — you may turn your sights to the frustration of getting your vehicle fixed. You may have heard about paintless dent repair as an alternative to full-on body work. Yes, it takes less time than auto body repair and can be more convenient, but is it right for your situation? It may turn out that Hance’s Uptown Collision Center auto body repair service is a better choice for you.

When is PDR a Viable Choice?

There are times in which paintless dent repair is a good choice, but it all depends on the type of accident you have been in. PDR is reserved for less serious accidents featuring small dings that are easy to bang out. Think: shopping carts at the grocery store, small fender benders, baseballs to the roof, etc. Paintless dent repair is generally a more affordable and speedy form of dent repair — one that doesn’t affect the paint job done at the factory. As a less intrusive process for dent repair designed, it’s best for small to medium repair needs. Using state-of-the-art technologies, your trusted Hance mechanic repairs dents by getting under the “skin” of the vehicle to gently coax dented panels back into position. This is done without damaging or scratching the panels at all. Because this approach does not involve painting, the price tag is lower than traditional dent repair work.

If your car has been affected by the following, PDR may be a good option for you:

  • Minor Hail damage
  • Door dings
  • Minor body creases
  • Small dents
  • Bumper indentations

However, this option isn’t always possible when it comes to larger, more serious dents. When you’ve been in a bigger accident with damage not only to the paneling but the paint job as well, it becomes necessary to repair dents and then color match and paint the vehicle. New panels may have to be ordered if the dent is large, scraped or gouged. It takes a trained eye to get the color just right and blend it in seamlessly. This takes vast knowledge of the specific brand and model of car as well.

auto body repair

When is Auto Body Repair Work a Better Choice?

While you may be hoping for paintless dent repair to remedy your situation because it generally takes less time, this isn’t always possible. In the case of auto body repair, the wait for your vehicle to be finished  is well worth it because you are essentially getting a new portion of your car. Panels are ordered from the manufacturer and paint has to be artfully applied to blend the two so it never looks as though you were in an accident. That’s where our technicians come in — who are more like artists than anything else!

Auto body repair is a better choice if the metal of your vehicle has been severely stretched, dented, gouged or creased and the paint is cracked.  With PDR, you simply can’t get scratches out or repair paint damage. In addition, cars that were made prior to 1990 are not great candidates for PDR, as the paint featured on those vehicles isn’t as resilient and flexible as the paint you see on newer cars. As an aside: after the Clean Air Act amendments of 1990, paint-makers began adding water-borne paints to their product lineups in response to clean-air initiatives to cut volatile organic compound emissions, according to Cars.com.

Importance of Developing Lasting Relationships with Customers

May 31st, 2016

Mays Family DallasPeople want to do business with other people — not companies. That’s why it’s so important for any company to build and cultivate relationships with their customers from day one. Here at Hance’s Uptown Collision Center, we know we wouldn’t be where we are today without our customers. You’ll always find our technicians helpful and customer service reps friendly. We want to get to know you and your car so that you feel good about giving us your business whenever you need to. You’ll know the work will get done quickly, and it will get done right.

We thought we would talk about the importance of nurturing lasting relationships with our customers as part of this week’s blog post.

Communication

There’s no such thing as over-communicating, says Forbes, which is why this is a key part of keeping clients informed through regular communications and updates. Through appointment reminders, specials and deals, and issues you need to know about, we make it a top priority to keep you informed. You have things to do, you’re busy and you want to get back on the road. We don’t keep you in the dark.

Being a Helpful Resource

Adding value to a customer’s experience is key. Providing value, convenience and information sharing draws customers in and helps them trust you. The key to the above heading is “helpful” — giving customers irrelevant information that poses no benefit to them is just a waste of time. Bothering you with information you don’t need just isn’t our style.

Honesty

Crooked auto body repair shops have become somewhat of an old cliche. The whole reason people bring their cars to a shop is because they don’t know how to fix them on their own. Many body shops know that and capitalize on it — especially when they see very young or very old people coming. Honesty is a big part of what we’re about here at Hance’s Uptown Collision Center. We believe it’s the responsibility of a company to be forthright in their dealings with customers in order to foster trust. Anyone can take a customer for a ride, overcharge them for sub-par service and low-quality parts. But they won’t get too far operating like that because word of mouth is a huge swaying factor in where people bring their cars for auto body repair service.

Meeting Deadlines

Just like in the corporate world, meeting deadlines is critical in adding value to your work. Being without a car is a big inconvenience for customers, and we recognize that. You need your vehicle to bring the kids to school, get to work, hit the market — just living life. Barring an unforeseen circumstance, when we give you a turn-around time, we follow through. Your word is your bond, points out Forbes, so by committing to a deadline, you reassure the client that your service will be done in time. Relieve your customers of worry, and they will come back again and again to schedule estimate.

Paintless Dent Repair vs. Auto Body Repair

April 19th, 2016

The world of auto repair can have some pretty confusing terms. Two of those terms: paintless dent repair and auto body repair may have you scratching your head. What do these two terms mean exactly and how are they different? Here at Hance’s Uptown Collision Center, we’re all about educating the public, so here’s a look at how they differ. By the way, we offer both kinds of services here at our Dallas-area shop.

Paintless Dent Repair

paintless dent repairWhen a motor vehicle has been in an accident and suffers damage, it can be restored using innovative solutions in paintless dent repair, painting, touch-ups, and precision color matches. Unfortunately, accidents of all kinds can and do happen. Almost 240,000 people were injured in motor vehicle crashes throughout Texas just in 2014, according to the Texas Department of Transportation. Thankfully not all of them are serious, but they leave their mark, to be sure, in the form of small dents.

The main difference between paintless dent repair and auto body repair is that it’s more affordable and faster to fix, plus it doesn’t damage the factory’s paint job. Best for small to medium dents, the latest state-of-the-art technologies are used to access underneath the vehicle’s “skin” and gently nudge dented panels back into position. This all occurs without scratches to the finish. This option is ideal for damage resulting from hail, small fender benders, dings, creases and small dents from impacts.

Auto Body Repair

Sometimes those dents from accidents and fender benders are much larger and can’t be fixed in the above way. For those needs, your motor vehicle is a better candidate for standard auto body repair. Depending on the severity of the dent, we will polish, sand, finish, buff and color match your panels so they blend seamlessly into the rest of the car. When we are finished, you won’t even believe there was damage in the first place! Sometimes we have to remove the whole panel and order a new one. We’ll keep you apprised of the wait time and hook you up with a rental in the mean time.

Auto body repair often takes longer than paintless dent repair because we have to send out for new panels and materials, which can take some time, then we have to perform the labor to get the job done. We’ll even work with your insurance company so you don’t have to deal with the stress of that whole process. If you’re paying outright for the damage, we’ll do our best to keep the costs low for you.

Whichever version of repair you need, you can count on Hance because we:

  • Are family owned and operated
  • Have been in business since 1955
  • Have an A+ BBB rating
  • Offer convenient hours of operation with seven service locations
  • Offer lifetime warranty on workmanship and materials
  • Offer competitive prices
  • Have high ratings on Yelp

You Got in a Car Accident…Now What?

March 24th, 2016

You were driving along innocently enough when all of a sudden, you’re blindsided by a driver who didn’t see the stop sign. Fortunately, everyone’s OK, but now you have a cracked-up car that needs collision repair service — pronto. What do you do now? Here are a few steps to take after you are involved in a car accident. After dealing with the immediate aftermath of the accident, the first step is to schedule an appointment with Hance’s Uptown Collision Center.

Next you should get in touch with your insurance company to see if you have “uninsured motorist” coverage in the event that you get in an accident with someone who does not have insurance. If so, you can get compensation from the driver to recover any losses, says CNN.com.

Now, onto the collision repair process…

Car Accident Dallas Texas

Drop off Your Vehicle

Once you drop off the vehicle at Hance’s, you’ll be required to fill out a drop-off agreement form, listing your contact information and insurance information which will allow us to starting working on the car. Don’t have an alternative mode of transportation? Let us arrange for a rental car for you during this difficult transition. Just so you’re aware: small repairs typically take between three and five days while more complicated jobs can take a week or even up to a month. When we give you an estimate, we’ll let you know of the time frame.

Verification

Next we will verify your car’s VIN, mileage, and license plate number, then shoot a video recording of the vehicle while noting the damage. Please notify us of any pre-existing dents, dings, and scratches so we don’t include those in our estimate.

Assess the Damage

After we have all the necessary information, we put it into our state of the art management software that allows our techs to assess the damage and review the insurance company estimate. Our goal is to provide affordable parts replacement so you don’t have to pay any more than you have to, all the while considering the amount your insurance company has agreed to pay along with “supplement” of needs.

Painting

Hance's Collision Repair in DallasThis is the fun part. Rest assured your car won’t spend more than a day or two in this painting and refinishing phase. For small jobs, it takes just a half day. Attention to detail and precision are both the name of the game here.

Reassembly

Putting all the parts back together again so they work efficiently and correctly is a big part of collision repair, and not something our technicians take lightly.

Cleaning Up

Quality control is the last phase of the collision repair process. This occurs at the completion of all repairs, painting and reassembly. Technicians give the car a once-over, test it out and make any adjustments if needed. It’s at this time that you’ll receive a call to come pick up your vehicle. You return the rental car, get your car back, and get on with life!

How to Lower Your Car Insurance

February 24th, 2016

how to lower car insuranceEveryone needs auto insurance — that’s a reality for car drivers of all ages. However, this doesn’t mean you should have to pay through the nose just to be sufficiently insured. It all depends on your research and approach. Do your homework and you can save hundreds of dollars on car insurance just by following a few tried-and-true tips. Lowering your car insurance premiums means you have more cash in your pocket to do the fun stuff.

Compare

This is the first step of your research. Call at least three different car insurance providers to get quotes on coverage. It’s worth the time you’ll spend online or on the phone to check out rates and policies — because they DO vary. Every company vows to save you money, but it’s your job to cut through the clutter to see what the real deal is. In addition to comparing overall rates between companies, ask about options for different drivers within one insurance policy type. This is because different drivers in your family may be at different levels and qualify for different discounts.

Consolidate

It usually pays to bundle, so look into combining all of your other insurance policies into one for a bulk rate. You can include home, renters, and other types of insurance with your auto insurance for one low price. Again, insurance companies vary in their consolidation deals so be sure to ask for that pricing when on the phone. Not only will this save you money in the long run, it will save you time and hassle too, as you don’t have to juggle the paperwork and log-in account numbers associated with each individual policy over multiple providers.

Lower Coverage

With the average car’s age being about 11 years in this country, you may want to consider lowering your collision insurance on your vehicle if it’s worth less than 10 times the premium amount, advises The Motley Fool. Everyone’s financial situation is unique, so if this would save you money each month and you meet the parameters, this could be a wise decision.

Higher Deductible

This is also a highly individual situation, but this option could also save you cash. The Insurance Information Institute says by raising your deductible from $200 to $500, you can reduce collision and comprehensive coverage premium costs by 15 to 30 percent; if you increase your deductible to $1,000, you can save even more — 40 percent or more in fact. Just keep in mind you will be responsible for paying this in the event you have an accident.

Ask About Discounts

This is a relatively easy way to find out how you can save on your car insurance, and it just takes a simple phone call to your existing provider. There are many discounts out there, including for:

  • Low mileage
  • Safe driving
  • Defensive driving courses
  • Students
  • Safety features
  • Loyalty
  • Multi-car
  • Anti-theft
  • Association membership

In regards to the association membership discounts, you may be eligible for this discount through work or personal connections. This may be through your membership in clubs, alumni associations, and societies — all of whom are willing to give drivers a discount on their auto insurance. Call your company’s HR department or your club chair person to inquire. It’s worth the phone call!
